Talk:S60 Platform and Symbian OS

[edit] Suggested merge
This article seems to cover what is also covered in Nokia S60. Seems to make sense to keep this in one place. Vegaswikian 20:13, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- A valid suggestion, but then you should check the number of times this information has been removed from the Nokia S60 page (which implies that it shouldn't really be there). Finding out which versions of S60 software are compatible with which phone is a nightmare and removing information like this just makes life harder for the rest of us. Merge this if you will, but someone will erase it again!!!
-
- Keeping multiple articles with the same i
nformation is not correct either. The information should be in a logical place. Nothing about any merge would delete information, just move it to a single location. The fact that some editors may be acting badly is not a reason to drive other bad decisions. Vegaswikian 16:28, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

- This information (the full list of Nokia S60/Symbian OS version numbers) is in no other article — this article exists because several editors have already felt it inappropriate for the Nokia S60 page.

- I think it should be merged, but without losing any info. All information should be retained and reorganized logically, there could be a history section with all compatible devices listed accordingly, as long as, its well laid out and simlple, I don't see how it could confuse anyone.--RadicalSatDude 09:28, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

- Symbian OS is an operating system that is used by three platforms: S60, UIQ and FOMA. So I think that the S60 article should not be merged with the Symbian OS article.--Mike Juan Lee 10:29, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

- Mike Juan Lee is correct, but the point isn't relevant here. The suggestion is to merge S60 Platform and Symbian OS and Nokia S60. Both articles are about S60, neither are just about Symbian. I think they should be merged, the S60 platform article would fit neatly as an introduction for S60 Platform and Symbian OS. 22 November 2006

- Mike is correct there are differences in the Operating Systems and Nokia, Sony Ericsson both use the Symbian Operating Systems. Soit is not a good idea to merge the two articles. Prasan Naik 6:00am 15 december 2006 (EST)

- Both articles are about the S60 platform. Neither are about just Nokia, or just the Symbian operating system. Both cover the same topic. Nothing is gained from different articles. S60 is a platform by Nokia that runs on Symbian OS, and licensed to phone manufactures. The "S60 Platform and Symbian OS" article is also about the S60 platform (that must be used on Symbian OS). The "Nokia S60" page redirects to a "S60 platform" article about the S60 platform (that must be used on Symbian OS), not specifically about Nokia's use of S60. One could say that Nokia is technically a licensee of S60 in the same way that Samsung and LG are. Merge without losing info.

[edit] Change names?
Perhaps if we don't merge any of the above articles some of them need their names changed, clearly disambiguating them? Mathiastck 21:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] An uninvolved parties comment on the code name revert war
As I just stumbled on the page I don't know the full story here, but if the code names are kept so secret how could they be cited properly? If a reliable source can be cited do so, and they should be kept if encyclopedic, otherwise they should not be mentioned as it is just rumor. EnsRedShirt 11:32, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- Good point. If the list created before is deemed unverifiable and thus unsuitable, I'm happy to concede its removal on that ground. 84.231.1.136 14:11, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
