[edit] Gameplay/ / / / [edit] Synopsis[edit] Setting
StarCraft II takes place in the same universe as its predecessor, around the early 25th century. Terran exiles from Earth have colonised a distant area of the Milky Way galaxy called the Koprulu sector, and after enduring a long conflict have established the Terran Dominion. However, at the same time, humanity becomes caught in a war between the Protoss and the Zerg. Although the Zerg lose their original leader at the end of StarCraft, they are regrouped under the leadership of Sarah Kerrigan, a Terran psychic infested by the Zerg. Proceeding to decimate their rivals, the Zerg become the most powerful organisation in the sector. Four years after the conclusion of the expansion pack Brood War, the Zerg have mysteriously withdrawn their forces, while both the Dominion and Protoss factions are reconstructing their infrastructures. In the novels between the games, it is revealed that a large number of artifacts constructed by the Xel'Naga, the race that created both the Protoss and the Zerg, have been unearthed across Dominion space. [edit] CharactersMany of the characters from the original game return in StarCraft II, in addition to new characters and characters introduced in the series' novels. Jim Raynor, a former marshal turned rebel, is the subject of the game's Terran campaign. Raynor is leading a paramilitary organisation against the Terran Dominion and its emperor Arcturus Mengsk, after Mengsk betrayed him in StarCraft. He is joined by his executive officer, Matt Horner, a character introduced in the novel Queen of Blades, and an old friend from Raynor's military past, Tychus Findlay. Mengsk himself is increasingly concerned about the threat of the Zerg in the wake of events portrayed in the The Dark Templar Saga trilogy. His son and heir, Valerian Mengsk, is also set to play an important role. Mengsk's former lieutenant, Sarah Kerrigan, has withdrawn her Zerg forces from sight to the Zerg base of operations on Char, and has been enhancing her broods for the inevitable future conflict. Lastly, the Protoss under their hierarch Artanis are struggling to reconcile the deep division between the bulk of the Protoss of race and the dissident dark templar. Meanwhile, the dark templar prelate Zeratul, concerned over revelations of Samir Duran's experiments with Protoss/Zerg hybrids at the end of Brood War, is seeking to answer Duran's cryptic clues and unravel the mysteries left by Xel'Naga artifacts.
