This nuclear reactor was a variant of the Submarine Fleet Reactor (SFR) with the horizontal steam generators pioneered in S1W and S2W.

Two boats of the Skate class were built with S4W reactors: USS Swordfish (SSN-579) [1] and USS Seadragon (SSN-584) [2]. During later overhauls, the S4W reactors in both subs were replaced with S5W reactors [3].
