Sundararajan Padmanabhan was born at Trivandrum in the Indian state of Kerala on the 5th of December, 1940. He went on to become the 20th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army in September 2000.

General Padmanabhan is an alumnus of the famous Rashtriya Indian Military College or RIMC, Dehradun. After completing his schooling at the RIMC, he went to the National Defence Academy, Pune.

In 1959, "Paddy", as he is affectionately known by his friends, finished his stint at the Indian Military Academy and was enrolled into the Regiment of Artillery. He has received the Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service to the Indian Army and to the nation.
During his time as the Commander of the 15 Corps in the Kashmir Valley, the Indian Forces made big gains over the militants and brought the insurgency situation under control.
