S.Muthiah is a well known journalist and columnist who is an authority on Madras (Chennai), and the British occupation in South India.
He has written several books including "Madras Discovered", "Madras - The Gracious City", "Tales of Old and New Madras", "The Parry Story", "Getting India on the Move", and "Words in Indian English". He has also edited geography text books and atlases for the Oxford University Press. He currently writes a weekly column for The Hindu called Madras Miscellany, published every Monday as a part of the Metro Plus supplement.
Muthiah was educated in Ceylon, India, and the United States. He was a journalist with The Times of Ceylon before moving to Madras.
Muthiah edits and publishes Madras Musings, a city fortnightly, for 'Chennai Heritage' and the magazine is supported as a public service by a number of organizations like Ashok Leyland, Murugappa Group, TCS, TVS Motor Copany, Sanmar, L&T, Sundaram Finance and other corporates.
