Hammond's first coaching position was for the Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana. Highlights of his one season as coach include a victory of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and DePaw University.[1]

Hammond was named the sixth head football coach for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and he held that position for the 1897 season. His overall coaching record at Lehigh was 3 wins, 7 losses, and 0 ties. This ranks him 24th at Lehigh in terms of total wins and 23rd at Lehigh in terms of winning percentage.[2]
