Singapore International Water Week is an international conference and exhibition for the water industry held annually in Singapore. Policymakers, business leaders and water industry experts and practitioners will be among some 6,000 delegates meeting in Singapore for the inaugural Singapore International Water Week on 23 to 27 June 2008. Organised on the theme of “Sustainable Water Solutions For Cities”, it is designed to be a global platform for networking and sharing technology and business solutions, as well a showcase for best practices and successful case studies in water management. [1] [2]

The event will feature the presentation of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize, given annually to an individual or organisation that has used innovative technologies, policies or programmes in an effort to solve the global water crisis and significantly improve living conditions. It is sponsored by the Singapore Millennium Foundation, a philanthropic body supported by Temasek Holdings, which has pledged S$1.5 million over five years to the award. Dr Andrew Benedek, a Canadian researcher and technopreneur who pioneered the development and commercialisation of low-pressure membranes for water and used water treatment, has been announced as the first recipient of the prize, which is named after Singapore’s elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew.[3] The low-pressure membranes have provided a cheaper means of purifying water, and are now used in treatment plants all over the world. In addition to receiving SGD300,000 and a gold medallion, Dr Benedek will deliver the inaugural Singapore Water Lecture at the event on 24 June 2008.[4] Other key events at Singapore International Water Week include:

  • The Water Leaders Summit, where decision-makers from government, utilities providers and industry will meet to discuss global water issues and challenges.
  • The Water Convention, where industry experts and researchers will review technologies and the practical delivery of water solutions.
  • The Water Expo, a trade show for buyers and sellers of water technologies and solutions. More than 300 companies from 21 countries will be participating in this exhibition.
  • The Water Festival, a series of water-based events and activities lined up for members of the public and international visitors.

Singapore International Water Week is organised by PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, and Singapore’s Ministry of the Environment & Water Resources. Key strategic partners for the event include the International Desalination Association, International Water Association, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Singapore Water Association. It will take place alongside the World Cities Summit, an international conference on public governance and the sustainable development of cities, as well as the East Asia Summit Conference on Liveable Cities.
