Sør-Odal is a municipality in the county of Hedmark, Norway.
Sør-Odal was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt).
The municipality is a rural community situated along the river Glåma and around the southern side of the lake Storsjøen. It is bordered by the municipalities of Eidskog in the south, by Kongsvinger in the east, and by Nord-Odal and Grue in the north . The terrain is dominated by rolling hills, lakes, and evergreen forests.
[edit] The name
The last element is the old district name Odal (Norse Ódalr). The first element of this is ó, a sideform of á f 'river' (here Glåma). The last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.
The first element Sør- ('southern') was added after 1819 when the parish Odal was divided in two. (See Nord-Odal.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1992). It shows three keys (to represent the three parishes of Oppstad, Strøm and Ulleren).
(See also the coat-of-arms of Gol.)
[edit] Economy
The economy is based on a mix of manufacturing, farming and services. Skarnes has a train connection to Oslo. Skarnes is also the home of Øystein Sunde - a great Norwegian songwriter and entertainer.
