São Miguel (Portuguese meaning Saint Michael) is a municipality located in the northeastern part of the island of Santiago in Sotavento in southcentral Cape Verde. The municipal population is around 16,104, the area is 91 km² and the density is about 176/km². The municipality was created in 1991. São Miguel is located about 60 km NNW of Cape Verde's capital Praia, SE of Tarrafal and N of Assomada and Picos.
São Miguel is linked with a highway linking Tarrafal and Praia and a mountain road to the Tarrafal–Assomada Route which also links to Assomada and Picos. Farmlands are situated within the coastline and valley areas, the mountains cover the rest of the municipality especially the Serra da Malagueta in the west. Grasslands and bushes covers the rest of the area with a couple of forests.
Its main economy is agriculture, fishing and tourism, it is followed by businesses. Most of the population are rural, the urban population mainly exist in the downtown area.
