Ryu-oh

Ryu-oh (Ryūō 竜王?) is one of the seven titles in Japanese professional shogi, and is the most prestigious title, along with Meijin.

The word "Ryu-oh" means "promoted hisha" (promoted 飛車, promoted rook) that is the most powerful piece in shogi. ("ryu"(竜) = dragon, "oh"(王) = king)

Ryu-oh tournament started in 1987.

Preliminary round of Ryu-oh tournament comprises six-class tournament and final tournament. Final tournament that determines the challenger is competed among eleven players (top five players of 1st class, top two of 2nd class and each top one of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class).

The player that wins four games out of seven first in the championship will become the new Ryu-oh title holder.

Prize money are ¥32,000,000 for the winner of championship (= new Ryu-oh title holder) and ¥8,000,000 for the loser. (approximately $320,000, $80,000 respectively)

Furthermore, compensation are ¥14,500,000 for (late) Ryu-oh title holder and ¥7,000,000 for the challenger. (approximately $145,000, $70,000 respectively)
