[edit] History

May 26, 1994, Clay Shrout held his trigonometry class hostage with a pistol. He had murdered his parents and his two younger siblings before coming to school. He was found guilty and mentally ill and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years.[citation needed] Stephen Sorrell, then assistant principal, is credited for talking Shrout into surrendering to police during the hostage crisis.[citation needed]

In May 2006, principal Randy Cooper died from a heart attack while standing in line at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.[citation needed] He was the only principal since the school's opening in 1992. The following August, it was revealed that Matthew Turner would replace Cooper as the new principal. In 2008, the Boone County district will open a fourth high school that will bear Cooper's name.

During the graduation before his death Randy Cooper delivered a speech: "No Sugar Coating: Life is not fair, get used to it! How to Make Life Smoother: Cultivate friends with good-humored people. Take lots of vacations. Take lots of naps. Religion: Get some and keep it! Habits: Make kindness a routine. It costs you nothing. Fear: It is nothing to be ashamed of. Regrets: Do not nurse them. Skill: If you want to cultivate a useful one, learn to ask the right questions. Dating: Do not marry someone with more problems than you have. Manners: There is no substitute for good ones. How to Save Time: Read the instructions first. How to Reduce Stress: Avoid arrogant people. Avoid deceitful people – once you figure out who they are. Learning: There is not much you cannot teach yourself by reading. Security: If you want to feel secure, save money. Be Forewarned: A thick skin is a useful thing. Be patient: It takes a long time to become the person you want to. Common sense is a rare and precious thing. Be stingy with promises – Be generous with forgiveness. Be gentle with the young and with the weak. Success is a journey, not a destination." -Randy Cooper
