Ryers is a neighborhood in the near northeast section of Philadelphia. It is commonly thought to be either Burholme or Fox Chase, which are both bordering neighborhoods - Fox Chase to the north and Burholme to the southeast. Ryers is bounded by Cottman Ave.(Rt. 73) on the southwest, Fillmore St. on the northwest. Both of these highways separate Philadelphia from Cheltenham and Rockledge(respectively), Montgomery County. The R8 Railway separates Ryers from Burholme and Fox Chase borders it via Hartel St. on the northeast.
The name Ryers comes from the Ryerss Estate which is located in Burholme Park along Central Ave. The Estate was owned by Joseph Waln Ryerss who left it to his son Robert who later left it to the Free Library of Philadelphia and later willed the land to the Fairmount park association for a public park.
