Indeed, there was somebody messing around. I have restored the legitimate versions. Her book seems to exist (it is listed at Amazon.co.uk), but did it actually win the Guardian Fiction Award? According to this website it was Lucy Ellman's Sweet Desserts which won the 1988 prize. The claim that Ruth Thomas has won the Guardian Fiction Award is repeated multiple times on the web (even excluding Wikipedia mirrors); perhaps it was shortlisted or something? OK. I have The Runaways here in front of me - I love this book. On the back cover it says "Winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Award 1988", and the same on the front. This is the Red Fox edition 1990 "16 18 17 15", ISBN: 0-09-959660-1. She has also written the following published by Red Fox, as it says on the back cover: The Class That Went Wild, The New Boy, The Secret, Guilty! and Hideaway, all of which I also have.
