The Rutherglen and Coatbridge Railway was a railway that ran between Airdrie and Rutherglen and built by the Caledonian Railway, which in turn became part of the LMS on 1 July 1923.

  • 3 April 1943 - Whifflet High to Airdrie East closed to passengers
  • 6 July 1964 - Calder to Airdrie East closed to freight
  • 5 October 1964 - Whifflet High to Langloan Junction closed to passengers
  • 7 January 1966 - Remaining passenger services and intermediate stations closed
  • 1 May 1972 - Scheduled passenger services resume along the line on Glasgow Central to/from Perth services.
  • 4 May 1974 - Scheduled passenger services cease, however diverted passenger trains continue to use the route (Glasgow Queen Street services into Glasgow Central; during the track re-modelling at Newton; and after the Newton rail crash).
  • 4 October 1993 - Schedule passenger services resume with stations opened at Carmyle, Mount Vernon and Baillieston.

The line between Rutherglen East and Whifflet North Junctions is open to passenger traffic, served by First ScotRail on the Whifflet Line.
