Ruth's troubles had still continued with Spike, when she found out that Spike was one of the builders doing repairs at the Collage. Spike trapped Ruth in a room and tries to force himself on her, but Rob Hawthorne stepped in to rescued her.

Ruth's marriage with Kurt was on the rocks as they argued, especially about spending Christmas with Ruth’s family. In a wake of the fight, Ruth and Kurt do some soul searching and realised that they were not right for each other, promoting Kurt to leave Hollyoaks.

Ruth got more heartache when Lewis told her that he had slept with Lorraine to pay of his debt, which left Ruth heartbroken. In all this trouble Ruth and Lewis finally broke up and Ruth than began to date John Stuart, her colleague, but that never worked out either.
