[edit] Ruth Beckett
Ruth Beckett is one of the title characters in the BBC drama Threads. She was played by Karen Meagher
[edit] Before the Attack
Ruth's first appearance was at the beginning of the film as she and her boyfriend, Jimmy, are chatting in Jimmy's car. Later, it is revealed that Ruth is pregnant; the young couple plan to marry and have arranged for their parents to meet. They secure themselves a flat to move into before the baby arrives.
On the day Ruth's parents are to meet Jimmy's parents, her mother points out that the pregnancy has brought out a determined streak in Ruth, a change which becomes apparently clear later in the film.
On the day of the attack Ruth goes into the basement of her house with her parents and her grandmother with some persuasion; over the next few days she begins to break down psychologically as she fears the baby will be born disfigured due to radiation poisoning.
[edit] After the Attack
Ruth wanders the countryside when her waters break and she gives birth to a girl. With no medical assistance she is forced to give birth alone and is forced to cut the umbilical cord by biting through it.
Ruth raises her daughter as best she can after a nuclear exchange; however, after 10 years she passes away, probably due to cancer and severe cataracts
