The word Russia has been used to refer to several Russian states:
- Russian Federation, the modern successor state of Russian SFSR and the Soviet Union
- The Soviet Union, albeit only informally and inaccurately describing a multinational union of Soviet republics
- Russian SFSR, a Soviet republic in the union
- Bolshevik Russia, the revolutionary state during the Russian Civil War
- The Russian Empire (Russian: Российская империя), a multinational state that existed from 1721 to 1917
- Tsardom of Russia, the Russian state from the 16th century to the late 17th century
- Grand Duchy of Moscow (Muscovy), the Russian state from the 14th century to mid 16th century
- Novgorod Republic, a Russian state between the 12th and 15th century
- Kievan Rus', the first Rus state formed by Varangians at the end of the first millennium. Often mistaken for the incorrectly transliterated name for Russian Federation
