The word Russia has been used to refer to several Russian states:

  • Russian Federation, the modern successor state of Russian SFSR and the Soviet Union
  • The Soviet Union, albeit only informally and inaccurately describing a multinational union of Soviet republics
  • Russian SFSR, a Soviet republic in the union
  • Bolshevik Russia, the revolutionary state during the Russian Civil War
  • The Russian Empire (Russian: Российская империя), a multinational state that existed from 1721 to 1917
  • Tsardom of Russia, the Russian state from the 16th century to the late 17th century
  • Grand Duchy of Moscow (Muscovy), the Russian state from the 14th century to mid 16th century
  • Novgorod Republic, a Russian state between the 12th and 15th century
  • Kievan Rus', the first Rus state formed by Varangians at the end of the first millennium. Often mistaken for the incorrectly transliterated name for Russian Federation

It may also refer to:

  • The land of the Rus', the east slavic people known today as Ukrainians, Belarusians and Russians (Russian: Русская земля, Latin: Ruthenia)
