Russell Michael Howarth (born 27 March 1982, in York, England) is an English footballer who is currently without a club.
[edit] Career
He started his career at York City, but as he began to get called up for the England under-20 squad in 2002, larger clubs such as Everton became interested in buying him, where he had a trial and played in a friendly against Falkirk, in which he kept a clean sheet.[citation needed][1] He later revealed he was interested in a move to Everton.[2] He had trial spells at Leeds United, Newcastle United, Sunderland Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers.[3]
He eventually joined Tranmere Rovers in a five-figure transfer in November 2002.[4] Initially, Howarth played as Tranmere's number 1, but ended up losing his place to John Achterberg and never regained it.[citation needed] He was released by Tranmere in May 2005.[5]
He returned to Yorkshire in June 2005 as Colin Todd signed him for Bradford City.[6] He revealed his desire for a loan away from Bradford for first-team football,[7] and former club York made a failed loan bid for him.[8] He was released by Bradford in May 2007.[9]
Howarth has retired from football and is now a paramedic.[citation needed]
