The Russelia is among the most common of garden plants[citation needed], and is easily recognized by its brilliant red flowers that are shaped like tall thin vases. It is also known as the Firecracker plant or Coralblow. Russelia grows in many parts of the world, and is mildly drought resistant.

Russelia equisetiformis and Russelia sarmentosa are commonly used to hide unattractive retaining walls or fences because it grows quickly and has dense foliage. Growing to a maximum height of 1.8 metres, it is a shrub which will tolerate full sun to partial shade. As an evergreen it blooms for most of the year.

Due to its attractively coloured flowers, this bush attracts birds and insects (such as bees) that feed on the nectar from its flowers.
