Rushon district

Rushon district or Nohiya-i Rushon (Tajik/Persian: Ноҳияи Рӯшон/ناحیۀ روشان) is a district in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, Tajikistan. Its capital is Rushon, also known as Vomar (pronounced: vamar), situated on the border with Afghanistan, 65 km North of Khorugh (the capital of GBAO).

Rushon is home to a beautiful lake Sarez, which was formed as a result of an earthquake in 1911 in Bartang valley in the west of the district. After a while of being forgotten Sarez (also called a Sleeping Dragon) reclaimed the attention of national and international community for study and mitigation of its potential threat of collapsing and causing devastating floods and landslides.

Rushon (Vomar) has a hospital, post office, bank offices (Orienbank, Agroinvestbank). Also it has a small airport witout a paved runway, that has the capacity to service small aircraft like AN-28. The district also has one Hydro Power Station in Shujand village (10 km from the district center) with the capacity of 600 Kw/h. An additional diesel unit was build during the Soviet times, to meet the energy needs of the district, which was abandoned after the break down of the Sovient Union and was not functional ever since.

Rushani language is spoken here. Rushon is renown for its arts and musical traditions. Many of the famous musicians such as: Gurminj Zavkibekov, Mohjon Nazardodova, Musavar Minakov, Sherali Abdulkaysov, Jonboz, Davlatyor Kurbonmamadov, Muboraksho Mirzoshoyev, Nobovar Chanorov and others are natives of this district.
