Rupert Charles Ponsonby, 7th Baron de Mauley TD (born 30 June 1957) is a British peer and retired Territorial Army officer.

[edit] Peerage and poloitial career

He succeeded his uncle, the 6th Baron de Mauley in October 2002. On March 10, 2005 he was declared the winner of a by-election for a Conservative hereditary peers' seat in the House of Lords He was the first peer to have acceded to his title after the House of Lords Act 1999 to have obtained an elective hereditaries' seat in the House.

He is currently an opposition whip, with responsibility for Trade and Industry. He is also Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office.[1]

His brother, Ashley George Ponsonby, was allowed by a Warrant of Precedence from the Queen to use the style of Honourable, by virtue of his status as the brother of a peer.[2]

Lord de Mauley first joined the Territorial Army in 1976, when he was commissioned into the Royal Wessex Yeomanry as a second lieutenant.[3][4] He was promoted to lieutenant in 1978,[5] major in 1988,[6] and lieutenant-colonel in 2003.[7] In 1988, he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Territorial) (TD).[8] He retired in 2005.[9]

Lord de Mauley announced his engagement in 2002 to a daughter of the late Lord Fanshawe of Richmond just before his uncle, the 6th Lord, died. He is now married. His heir is his younger brother, who is now married since 2006 to the former Camilla Gordon-Lennox, nee Pilkington.[citation needed]
