Rumi Calendar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rumi Calendar, a calendar based on the Julian Calendar, used by the Ottoman Empire after Tanzimat. It was used for economic reasons and is a solar based calendar, assigning a date to each solar day.

Before that Ottomans were using the Islamic calendar, of which days are numbered within each lunar phase cycle. Because the length of the lunar month is not an even fraction of the length of the tropical year, a purely lunar calendar quickly drifts against the seasons. Thus, Ottoman Empire started to use the solar based, Rumi Calendar in 1850 for filing the taxes and governmental issues. It starts to count the years with the same event that also Islamic Calendar started: Hijra. In this calendar, March is the first month of the year. 2008 is the year 1424 in Rumi Calendar.
