Ruhengeri Province is one of the 12 former provinces of Rwanda and is located in the north of the country. It consists of 10 districts and the town of Ruhengeri. It shares borders to the north with Uganda, and to the northwest with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ruhengeri is the most populous province of the country as well as the most densely-populated. It has some 978,100 inhabitants (2002 figures), and an area of 1,665 square kilometers. The Rwandan Genocide claimed over 9000 deaths in this province alone[citation needed]. It is a mountainous province, and includes the 4,507-meter dormant volcano Mount Karisimbi.
