[edit] Rugby's Introduction in NZ

I have read two conflicting views, one that Rugby was introduced to Nelson in 1870 by Charles John Monro, the other that it was being played in Christchurch earlier then that (1868 from memory). I don't know if the reference given for the view expressed in this article is that reliable (being a website). I'm very certain that there is at least some degree of disagreement on when the first game of rugby was played in NZ. This should probably be noted in the article, as long as there are references to back it up. Can anyone help with this? - Shudda talk 05:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I think the rules were not drawn up until 1871 (off the top of my head), any games played before that may not have been very 'rugby-like'. This is one of the reasons why sometimes different dates are given e.g. for some reason the South African union consider 'Winchester football' to be a form of rugby and therefore date the introduction of rugby to South Africa to early games of Winchester rules played at Bishop's school.GordyB
Yes, Christchurch Football Club, the oldest rugby club in NZ, played "Christchurch rules" when it was founded in 1863. The club deserves an article me thinks. Grant | Talk 02:21, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Christchurch is the oldest football club in New Zealand, but it played several codes of football before staying with rugby. I think whats in debate is whether it could have played a match before 1870. I'm going to have to find some references eh. - Shudda talk 02:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Culture

Rugby has had a large impact on New Zealand's culture, self image and politics. I think that's one area the article could expand into.Mostlyharmless 06:29, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

I have added something about the rugby channel on sky tv, this could be part of a culture section-S.ferguson 09:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

I think maybe the NZRU logo would be better suited to this page 202.154.136.93 20:35, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
