Rugby league is a popular team sport emerging in Greece. The Greece national rugby league team is now an affiliate member of the Rugby League International Federation.

Rugby league has never been played in Greece, but in 2006 the country staged its first international match as well as started a domestic competition.

In 1980, Greek-born George Peponis became the captain of the Australian national rugby league team.

The popularity of rugby league in Greece will be known once a domestic competition gets under way in 2006, with an International to be held in Athens in the latter stages of the year.

Greece will be staging their inaugural domestic competition in 2006. There are 4 teams to kick the season off with players coming from England, Australia and New Zealand to help out. The primary aim will be to get the Athens populate playing rugby league.

The Competition will run for 4-6 weeks with 2 games per week. The length of the competition will increase over time. It will be fully sponsored by a major company based in Greece.

The national team has played numerous games. Their major test will be when they stage an international on home soil for the first time ever in 2006.
