[edit] British Raj article

Your continued participation in removing bias from the current British Raj article is appreciated. A small group of people have overtaken this article to show British rule in India in a highly exaggerated positive light without any discussion of large scale atrocities, suppression of rights, racist policies, general looting of national wealth. See discussion at British Raj Neutrality Check DiscussionDesione (talk) 17:08, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks...

...for the info! Should we put something on the Stockholm group in the article? I could translate the part from the diva-portal article. --Soman (talk) 15:19, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pingle

Congratulations. I have a few more bits on him, which I must fish out and add to your so well documented article. By the way, the English Christian name is Hugh (not Hew): that must have been a "slip of keyboard"!--BobClive (talk) 16:17, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings

Dear Rueben lys, Receive my hearty greetings, too, for a Happy and prosperous New Year.--BobClive (talk) 17:15, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation

We must mention somewhere that Swami Satyananda Puri of Gadhar fame was not Swami Satyananda Puri or Bhavabhushan Mitra. Also we have to point out that Pingle's name has also been written as Pingley in various documents.--BobClive (talk) 11:00, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Duplicate images uploaded

Thanks for uploading Image:Khalsa Flag.png. A machine-controlled robot account noticed that you also uploaded the same image under the name Image:Flag of the Khalsa in the Anglo-Sikh wars.png. The copy called Image:Flag of the Khalsa in the Anglo-Sikh wars.png has been marked for speedy deletion since it is redundant. If this sounds okay to you, there is no need for you to take any action.

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone, and you do not need to respond. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and refer to 'my contributions' to remind yourself exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. For tips on good file naming, see Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions about this notice, or feel that the deletion is inappropriate, please contact User:Staecker, who operates the robot account. Staeckerbot (talk) 17:44, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello!

Thanks for the two omissions [</ref>] in the Bagha Jatin article. Let me know what you think of the paragraphs I have added to PingleHis name has been written also PINGLEY, just as RASBEHARI/ RASH BEHARI. It will be difficult to normalise these spellings; we just have to keep on mentioning it.--BobClive (talk) 06:38, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

Dear Rueben lys, I have always been a solitary searcher, with one-pointed eagerness to explore available data as much as possible, expecting future scholars to concentrate on a suitable superstructure. As such, my personal situation is best defined by the Bengali saying, naa gharer, naa parer: such rare occasions of recognition as you offer help me to cling to my conviction and move forward. Hearty thanks.--BobClive (talk) 16:41, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hindu-German Conspiracy

Congratulations on GA! I know HGC has been a ton of work for you; I'm so glad to see your work acknowledged. I want to start trimming for length—I'm fairly confident that I can do this wisely, especially now that you've started so many articles that are linked as main article/see also. Are you more or less done creating related articles? Maralia (talk) 16:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

I've tackled the Ghadar Party section first. My main goal was to cut down to the barest facts, since the rest has a proper home in the main article on Ghadar. Probably the only controversial change was my removal of Shyamji Krishna Varma from 'See also'. His article doesn't mention Ghadar, so either he's not directly relevant to that section and doesn't belong, or his relevance needs to be clarified in his article & in HGC. In any case, I rewrote quite a few sentences and reorganized the section; I think it flows better now. Let me know what you think. Maralia (talk) 06:42, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Shyamji's Centre in London since the beginning of the 20th century was the nursery for future activists, a cross-road for pioneering ideas directly coming from India and moving to the American centres, an inspiration to people like Taraknath Das who, after six years of field work in North America, will found with Har Dayal the Gadhar/Ghadar movement. Har Dayal did receive ideas from his stay with Shyamji and Das had a regular trans-Atlantic exchange with Shyamji, reflecting sometimes in his Free Hindustan light coming from Shyamji's Sociologist.--BobClive (talk) 07:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Chandra Chakravarti

Here is a passage on the despicable creature. You may find more in Arun Chandra Guha's First Spark of Revolution.

"The latent separatism between the Sikh and most of the Hindu leaders then took a regional turn: since Chatto – a Bengali – enjoyed an absolute confidence of the German authorities, since Gupta, another Bengali – represented in Washington the will of the latter, since Taraknath – again a Bengali – had been the pioneer of the political activities in the USA, the Ghadar tried to reshape its aspirations according to a new orientation capable of imposing the Sikh superiority on the movement. By interpreting this separatist spirit, there occurred even a troublesome dissidence among the Sikhs themselves : already contesting the political intentions of Dayal and Taraknath, all those who were more concerned with strictly social and religious activities, raised an objection to the financing of the political activities with money generously contributed by the Sikhs to assure their own civil protection. On the top of all that, the searching look of Hopkinson, the British spy used by the Immigration Service of Canada, succeeded in isolating a handful of Sikh supporters of the British Crown, constantly to track and to denounce the patriots’ activities. At the height of an unbearable hide-and-seek triggered by this craftsman of separatism, some patriots got fed up with Hopkinson’s pernicious play and murdered him, on 21 October 1914, at the Law Court of Vancouver.

"In India and elsewhere, the dedicated spirit and the honest devotion of a great number of Bengali revolutionaries gave to the Extremist movement its highest distinction, whereas “for their superior intellectual faculty” – notably for their advanced techniques (as Taraknath in the USA, Rasbehari Bose in the Punjab) – they were constantly solicited. At the same time, in 1916, a Bengali adventurer of a doubtful character, named Chandrakanta Chakravarti, with his cunning German accomplice, Ernst Matthias Sekunna, will oust and replace Heramba Gupta as mediator between the Ghadar and the Berlin Committee : he will not only create an artificial enterprise to divert the German funds to flourish his bank accounts and to own real estates in New York, but also of double espionage. Moreover, intoxicated by his success, Chakravarti did not mistrust possible counterespionage : having stirred the curiosity and the jealousy of the Czech revolutionaries emigrated to the USA, he left ample written proofs in his apartment at 364 West 120th Street (New York). Emmanuel Victor Voska and Ladislav Urban, associates of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk (1850 – 1957) – future President of Czechoslovakia – discovered therein a gold mine : the watchman of the building was himself a Slovak from Moravia and an active member of a Czech revolutionary faction. Making use of a free access to the apartment where – in addition to most valuable documents scattered all over – numerous meetings between the Indian revolutionaries and the German representatives were held. Voska engaged spies to trace the Indo-German chain-work up to China: some of his interlocutors, supposed Austrian patriots, communicated lightning information to Voska, right from the content of the despatches of Von Papen (German Military Attache in Washington), Zimmermann’s answers, the expedition of arms and munitions on board the Annie Larsen and the Maverick to be delivered on the Eastern coast of India, upto the projects of the Germans to sabotage factories of American explosives etc. Transmitted on time by Masaryk, in London, this information had such a repercussion in the International Office of the Allies that – especially after having seized, through the diligence of the British navy, the first vital cargos containing arms and munitions intended to serve the revolutionary cause in India – Masaryk got, in exchange, in addition to expected credits and prestige, the recompense he deserved." (From The Intellectual Roots of India's Freedom Movement (1893-1918) : unpublished English translation of Dr Prithwindra Mukherjee's French Thesis, defended in 1986.--BobClive (talk) 17:30, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I wonder if this bit of information has been of any use to you.--BobClive (talk) 07:25, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:IPKF Troops.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:IPKF Troops.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:30, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:U Go offensive.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:U Go offensive.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. High on a tree (talk) 14:52, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:PVC Medal.jpg

Can you show me the source which states that the work by Indian Government is in PD? I can show you that it is copyrighted and the holder of the copyright is the Government itself.

From the copyright handbook published by the Indian Copyright Office ([2])

What is a government work?

"Government work" means a work which is made or published by or under the direction or control of

the government or any department of the government

any legislature in India, and

any court, tribunal or other judicial authority in India.

so the image under question is Government work.

Who is the owner of copyright in a government work?

In the case of a government work, government shall, in the absence of any agreement to the contrary, be the first owner of the copyright therein.

So the image is copyrighted and the reason is a false reason. Σαι ( Talk) 12:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:Azad Hind Cabinet.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

[edit] Tokyo Boys

Ok, so you are saying that they were not Japanese collaborators because you are a patriotic Indian. However, these were former Indian troops of the British Army that willingly trained to serve with the enemy. Regardless of domestic politics after the war they were collaborating with the Japanese. On the administrative side, their significance is not so crucial to the Second World War that they should be in the root directory where no article is supposed to go. Now, I am going to revert you, and we can discuss the best suitable category on the article talk, ok.--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 22:04, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
