- Aldwych was also home to the later Strand Theatre
The Royal Strand Theatre was located in the Strand, London, England. It was built in 1832 in 7 weeks, using an earlier building that had previously been used to house panoramas. It was enlarged in 1836 and condemned in 1882, which required it to be rebuilt. In 1905, the theatre was demolished to enable Aldwych underground station to be built.
The theatre was home to many successful operettas and other works in the 1870s, including Madame Favart and Olivette. The musical comedy A Chinese Honeymoon opened in October 1901 and ran at the theatre for a record breaking 1,075 performances.
