Vice Admiral Sir Roy Russell Dowling KCVO, KBE, CB, DSO (28 May 1901 - 15 April 1969) was a long serving Royal Australian Navy (RAN) officer. On February 24, 1955 Dowling was appointed First Naval Member, Australian Commonwealth Naval Board, and Chief of Staff of the RAN. He died of a coronary occlusion on 15 April 1969 in Canberra Hospital and was cremated.

[edit] Early life and career

Roy Russell Dowling was born on 28 May 1901 in the town of Condong, New South Wales. In 1915 Dowling entered the Royal Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay as part of the first intake. Although an underachiever academically, Dowling achieved the position of chief cadet captain and graduated as the King's medallist in 1918.[1]
