Roy Carter is a Democratic candidate in the 2008 election for the 5th Congressional District of North Carolina -- his opponent is Virginia Foxx. The district includes much of the northwestern portion of the state, and also portions of Winston-Salem.
The son of Marion "Bill" Carter, a tobacco farmer, and Jessie Buckner Carter, an assembly-line worker, Roy Carter grew up in rural North Carolina and has lived nearly all of his life in various North Carolina mountain communities. The youngest of three children, he earned his degree from East Tennessee State University and then married Patricia Burleson of Barnardsville in 1965. They have three children: Todd Carter, Andrea Carter Gimlin, Stacey Carter and son-in-law Wiley Gimlin.
For the last 40 years, Roy has served as an educator and football coach in Ashe, Wilkes and Surry counties -— all of which are in the 5th Congressional District. Roy has dedicated his life thus far to educating young people, motivating them to achieve their goals and being a positive, affirming influence in their lives.
