The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) is the second oldest eye hospital in the British Isles. It is second in this regard to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. There is a stone at the small entrance into the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital with the phrase "Founded 1812" inscribed on it. The MREH is the embodiment of elegant Victorian architecture, being made of red brick. Although in the year 2007 the building has a weathered appearance, the MREH continues to stand on Oxford Road (an arterial route associated directly with the epicentre of Manchester) as a rather imposing and distinguished edifice. Like the Whitworth Art Gallery on the opposite side of the road and like St Mary's Women's Hospital further along the road, the MREH is distinguished from adjoining buildings by its brick. At the time of writing, the fate of the MREH building is uncertain since a new Manchester Royal Infirmary is being built only metres away. The plan is for the ophthalmic services to be taken out of this splendid Victorian house and be placed into a new ultra-modern wing within the new 21st century super-hospital. This move is planned for the year 2009 and the fate of the glorious Victorian building thereafter is presently undefined.
