Hi Rowlan. In response to your questions (I've numbered them in the same way):

1. Technically, O'Rothlain isn't a true anglicized name. It's the original Gaelic name, spelt in the style of Irish names in the English language (i.e. using an apostrophe after the O and not using diacritics - and as you probably know from your own research, pronounced "oh roh-len/oh rowlan" in Irish). Books and websites etc written in English on Irish genealogy (especially those originating outside of Ireland) often tend to avoid using Irish language diacritics on names, mostly for stylistic reasons. Compare the contemporary comedian Dara Ó Briain, who is usually credited as Dara O Briain or Dara O'Briain at gigs or on TV in Britain.
2. Irish names are usually very systematic, and from the name it is evident that Ó comes from the Irish Ua, meaning grandson or descendant. The word that follows Ó will go into the genitive, and to return a word of the sort that "Rothlain" is to the standard nominative, the i before the end is removed. I must admit that the translation might not be perfect, as I'm not sure whether Rothlan is just a name - it could be a title, occupation or something else. But the name does mean "grandson/descendant of [whatever Rothlan means]". I can't find "rothlan" in my Irish dictionaries, but I have found "Rothlán/Róithleán" (wheel!), and doing a bit of Googling, I'm finding that Ó Rothlain might not be the most correct Gaelic spelling - this link seems to give the name "Ó Rothláin", but whether it is the same name at all, I can't say. I could just be barking up the wrong tree! But at any rate, the name does mean "descendant of Rothlan/what 'rothlan' means". --Kwekubo 00:03, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for citing a source, but now the photo needs a proper license. If you want to keep it on Wikipedia, you will need to make a fair use claim by placing the tag {{Fair use in}} and writing below why you think it qualifies for fair use. Am I a copyright nazi? I'm having a little difficulty understanding this as I'm not too sure how the mechanics of the Portal work. AFAIK a template should only be used for something used more than once. I've copy / pasted the template code into the portal so that it looks exactly the same as before only it does not use the template. No reason not to delete it now unless you can think of another use for it.GordyB 16:19, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Please provide a link to where you obtained Image:Nhswwscrum.jpg. Just quoting "Flickr" is not enough. Also please do not upload copyright images of items for which a free alternative could easily be obtained, such as the rugby ball and the pint of Guinness, as this is not fair use. After notification from the copyright owner, I've deleted this image and Image:Leedstykestry.jpg. These were both originally licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution - No Commercial Use - No Derivatives license, which is not the same as the Creative Commons Attribution license, and not a "free" license in that we can't create derivative works and we can't use it in commercial contexts. As such, it's not free per the Image use policy, and we can't use it.

Sorry Rowlan, I know you would have put some time into them, and I'm not opposed to them at all, I just removed the template from Stade Francais, Biarritz and Toulouse as it wasnt complete and was showing up a lot of {{ }} etc gaps. The codes you used to create the kits are still in the history so they can be taken, but the template will need to be tweaked, and all teams should have them, not just three. But it is a good idea. Hi, I noticed you emailed the author of the above image and had him licence it under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence. Unfortunatly this is not free enough for Wikipedia. The most simular licence that is suitable for use Wikipedia would be a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike Licence. The licence you selected from the list was "This image is licensed under the Creative Commons

Would you mind explaining two things to me:

• Firstly how an image can be licenced as both GFDL and as being in the public domain.
• Secondly how a still taken from a television broadcast can be licenced either of the above.

Well technically I didn't delete it, an admin reviewed my suggestion it be deleted and agreed. On a more serious note, the image was as you state, an image from a television broadcast. This would mean it was not GFDL or Public Domain but copyrighted. As such we could only use it on Wikipedia if we could claim fair usage on it. Criteria number one that must be met to claim fair use is "No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information.". Seems as a person at an Ireland game could take a photo of the anthems being played, and then licence it under a free licence, I believe that a free equivalent can be created and therefore the deleted image cannot be used under a claim of fair use. As a final point, I notice this is far from the first image you've uploaded that's been deleted, and from your message on my talk page ("It's a screen capture...what's it supposed to be liscenced under?") can I suggest you take a few moments to read through WP:UPIMAGE and WP:FU. For the 2007 Rugby World Cup WikiProject Rugby union is launching an Improvement Drive for national rugby union teams; specifically those participating in the Rugby World Cup.

We need your help! Here is what you can do:

• Adopt a national rugby union team article and collaborate with other members to improve it.
• Find, create and upload free images that will help improve these articles.
• Copy-edit, reference, and expand articles when and where you can.
• Promote the project and encourage others to join.

I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

"Th" in Irish is the eclipsed version of the letter "t", and sounds like the English letter "h". For example, the word 'thug' sounds like 'hug'. As regards your name, the way I'd explain it is that "roláin" would sound a bit like "RULL-awn", whereas "rothláin" has a definite H sound in the middle. --Kwekubo (talk) 21:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
