Founded in 1880, Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School (also known as RHSM or simply Rowland Hall) is a private school located on two campuses in Salt Lake City, Utah.[1] It provides classes and programs for students in preschool through grade 12 in four divisions: an Upper, a Middle, a Lower, and a Beginning School. RHSM is an independent private school and bases its foundation on values of open-mindedness and free-thinking. One of the goals of Rowland Hall-St. Mark's school is for students to consider broader connections of their academic studies. Critical thinking skills are heavily stressed. RHSM's current headmaster is Alan Sparrow, with the Middle school principal being Stephen Bennhoff, the Upper school principal Lee Thompson, and the upper school vice principal, Ryan Hogland.
Although Rowland Hall, as an academically-focused school, is not usually known for its athletes, it does claim a nationally accredited ski program called Rowmark.[2] Picabo Street attended the school in the 1980s.
The Debate Team enjoys a good deal of success on the extremely competitive national circuit. With a total of 6 bids to the TOC, the school has established itself as a major player nationally.
The men's basketball team returned to the state tournament in 2008 after several years of drought.
The men's tennis team won 4 consecutive state championships from 2000-2004, also beating many of the larger schools in Utah who often went on to win state championships in the 3A, 4A, and 5A divisions during those years.
