Rover (bark)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1867, the American merchant bark, Rover, wrecked off the coast of Formosa. The crew that survived the wreck were killed by local aboriginals, a band of warriors from the Kaolut tribe, in revenge for earlier killings of tribe members by foreigners.

Admiral Henry H. Bell led an expedition against them, including USS Wyoming and USS Hartford. Alexander Slidell MacKenzie was killed in the action on 13 June 1867.

The Rover incident plays a critical role on USA military history in terms of shaping US Marine Corps' "rules of encounter" in "Small Wars".
