Roundshot

Solid roundshot was the standard projectile of cannons for naval engagements over longer distances until the invention of fixed rounds. Usually it was a simple ball of iron with a size fitting the cannon, but other materials, such as stone, were tried. It was used mainly to damage the hull of enemy ships and to break the formation of advancing attack waves in ground based artillery during the early stages of battle.
