[edit] Summary
Description:
This animation is a supporting illustration for the following two animations: Image:Rotating_fountain_coriolis_effect01.gif and Image:Rotating_fountain_coriolis_effect02.gif
The animation represents a rotating disk (as seen from a co-rotating point of view), from which a small "fountain" ejects squirts of water. The drops of water are in inertial motion; no force is acting on the drops of water. This animation represents the motion of the drops of water with respect to a co-rotating coordinate system.
The red arrows represent the centrifugal term of the equation of motion for motion with respect to a rotating coordinate system. The green arrows represent the coriolis term of the equation of motion for motion with respect to a rotating coordinate system.
Animation 01 is a fluent animation of the same disk and fountain, seen from an inertial point of view. Animation 02 is a fluent animation of the disk and fountain as seen from a co-rotating point of view.
