[edit] Early life
Rosli Mansor was born the youngest in his family. Before entering national service, his elder brother gave a then 10-year-old Rosli his acoustic guitar and guitar chord book.[1] The exposure to The Carpenters, The Beatles, Scorpions, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep[2], coupled with the fascination for the instrument, made a young Rosli determined to teach himself how to play the guitar and rock music.
He owned his first electric guitar on his 15th birthday. The purchase was made possible with his savings earned from his jobs as a newspaper delivery boy, a paper cutter at a local print shop and cash from his late mother. It was also on his 15th birthday that Rosli made the decision to be a musician.
After leaving school, Rosli got involved in music and got a few friends to start a band. In his interview with radio station Lush 99.5FM on January 8, 2008, he said the band used to gatecrash Malay weddings as such events were the only opportunities that allowed them to play music[3].
[edit] Career
Juggling between his early jobs as a display artist and playing at gigs, Rosli eventually chose to be a musician as his career path.
In 1990, he became a full-time staff at the local Yamaha Music School[1] while continuing to perform at gigs in the evenings. Besides teaching at the school, he also teaches guitar as a private instructor. He has played at popular local night spots such as Balaclava, Ballymoon, Harry's Bar, Indochine, Muddy Murphy's and One Rochester. He had also worked with several local musicians such as pop singer-songwriter Tanya Chua, ex-Mediacorp actress Evelyn Tan, Trisno Ishak of now-defunct R&B/hip-hop group Urban Xchange, etc.
Rosli composed and arrange soundtracks for several short films Norman On The Air, Autograph Book and Lunchtime made by Singaporean filmmaker Wee Li Lin. He had created music for localised television commercials aired on American cable television channels Nickelodeon and Nick Junior under Turntable Music.[4]
Other than playing the role of a teacher and musician, he was an assistant producer and sound engineer for a local Malay compilation album, Tarian Melayu Tradisional.
Greatly influenced by the likes of Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth and Scott Henderson, Rosli entered the studio to work on his debut rock instrumental album, Dragged, in 2005. The album, under the label Snoots Music Group, took two years in the making and was officially launched at The Art House's Earshot Cafe on 27 January 2007.
In August 2007, Rosli was a guest performer for Indonesian pop band, Ungu, at the Singapore Expo. In the same month, he had two performances at Hard Rock Cafe Singapore and Esplanade.[5]
The song Pakoo Boomi from his rock instrumental album Dragged was featured in a compilation CD released by local magazine, LIME in March 2008. Rosli was described by the writer to be "Singapore's resident virtuoso guitarist whose clean precision is enough to make the best diamond cutters looking sloppy".[6]
Rosli got together popular guitarist Addy Rasidi, female bassist Wendy Phua and drummer Alvin Tan to form the Rosli Mansor Band and they opened for local Malay band competition Anugerah Band 2008 on May 6, 2008, live on television channel Suria[7].
He is currently managed by terraBox management.
[edit] Other projects
In 2008, he created Fretboard Frenzy, a platform to showcase Singapore's musicians passionate about musical instruments with a fretboard.
Fretboard Frenzy: Rise of the Stringers[8], a guitar workshop held on March 1, 2008, was co-presented by terraBox management and local music forum SOFT.com.sg. During Rosli's workshop segment, he debuted his fretless guitar and performed a song from his upcoming second album named Ego or Truth (New Born}, which was showcased for the first time. His fretless guitar has the faces of The Beatles painted on the body.
The second Fretboard Frenzy: Rise of the Stringers [9] was held on May 3, 2008. The second guitar workshop featured guitarists Addy Rasidi of Malay rock band CRADLE, Malik of Malay neo-classical metal band MALEX, Rosli and guest presenter Shern Wong. Rosli's custom-made double neck guitar was featured during the workshop. The front of the guitar body was painted with the character that personified his song Rescuing Rukia and the back of the guitar was painted with an image of a boy with a pizza box as a head. And instead of the usual fretted necks, one of the neck is fretless.[10]
[edit] Gear
Rosli currently uses the Valley Arts Custom Pro electric guitar[1]. He owns other guitars such as two Steinberger M series models, two Godin Multiac SA in nylon and steel, an Ernie Ball Axis,[11], a custom-made double neck guitar (with one fretless neck) and a fretless guitar.
He uses other equipment such as Morley's Wah-wah pedal, amplifiers by Hughes & Kettner and Marshall and pre-amplifers by Mesa Boogie[11]. Local pedal maker the om laboratories created a Rosli Mansor ("RM"} limited edition of its Sahasrara overdrive pedal. The normal Sahasrara pedal is in black but the RM edition is in white.
[edit] Personal life
One of Rosli's favourite past time is sipping teh tarik (tea with milk in Malay), besides spending time with his two cats[2], one of which is called Toby[11].
