Born in Nicosia,Cyprus in 1946, Ronis Varlaam is a graduate of the London Film School and St Martin's School of Art.
He has produced and directed several documentaries for Channel 4 including The Toughest Profession (1968), The Enthusiasts (1984) and The Green Line: Memories of Cyprus (1985). Latterly, he has also made a number of short films some of which have been shown at Raindance, Portobello and other film festivals as well as in galleries and alternative spaces. The latest being Big Bang (2000) and Voice Over (2004).
His exhibitions include Memory and Desire at Manchester Metropolitan University where 25 paintings were exhibited; C21-Watercolour in the 21st Century at the Royal Watercolour Society; Sense at the Kirkby Gallery, Merseyside, which was the first showing of the first 11 paintings from his The Waste Land series; Time at Croydon Clocktower; Cypriot Artists of the 21st Century, Nicosia; Self-Service at Five Years, London; Greenpeace in Aberdeen and Glasgow; Angels at Lauderdale House/KAOS Organisation; Kiss at Gallery K; Sex, Health, Education at Cooltan Arts; Outpost, a fringe event at the Venice Biennale; S.L.U.M.P./South London Unrecognised Masterpieces Prize, a mixed exhibition at the House of William Blake.
