Rong people
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rong (Chinese: 戎; Wade-Giles: Jung) referred to an ancient non-Chinese population who lived to the west of the Zhou state in modern Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia and were often hostile to the Chinese.
The name Rong also refers to an ancient dialect from Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia. The Rong fell into a different category after the Zhou Dynasty, the terminology usually referred to various peoples in the west during the early and late medieval times.
The 7th century commentary to the Hanshu by Yan Shigu says: "Among the various Rong in the Western Regions, the Wusun's shape was the strangest; and the present barbarians who have green eyes and red hair, and are like a macaque, belonged to the same race as the Wusun."[1] [2]
