[edit] Coaching career
In the interim, Turner spent eight years as head coach at the University of Illinois. His overall record at Illinois was 35 wins and 57 losses, for a winning percentage of .380; the highlight of his tenure was guiding the Illini to the 2001 Big Ten Conference Championship and that season's Sugar Bowl for a 10-2 record, however he was fired after following it up with three consecutive losing seasons. Ron Turner coached at USC under Ted Tollner and Larry Smith (football) from 1985 to 1987.
Turner was the head coach at San Jose State University for one season, in 1992, before being hired by Dave Wannstedt as the Bears offensive coordinator.
