Talk:Romeo + Juliet

[edit] request to add an external link
I run a website where we write synopses and spoilers for movies, and I'd really like to link to our Romeo + Juliet synopsis. I'm not trying to spam; I really think this would be useful and informative to anyone looking for a bit more detail on what happens in the movie. And this wouldn't break any Wikipedia rules concerning external links...but posting the link myself WOULD break the rules. I can only ask that folks here take a look and if anyone thinks it would be useful to others, to please post the link. Here's the synopsis: http://www.moviecheat.com/ShowDetails.php?mid=142
Oh, I also fixed this discussion page; there were items without categories. Rasi2290
[edit] english language picture
While I appreciate the effort, wouldn't it be better to have a picture of the English-language release of the movie?

- I did not have the right one (as mentioned in the image), but now the problem is solved ;-) Fantasy
[edit] "MTV-like action?
- I'm not sure the expression "MTV-like action" is very good - I can see what it means in the context (and the target audience that this imples for the film) ..but it isn't especially descriptive. I'll amend if I can think of something better. (tho I suspect it deserves a somewhat longer description)

Yes, I don't even know what MTV-like action means at all! (Jamandell (d69) 18:32, 9 September 2005 (UTC))
[edit] personal POV
I think this article needs to change its personal point of view. It seems like an essay or homework, instead of article about a movie. HoneyBee
- I don't have the expertise for this article, there are things to be consider:
1. Avoid personal POV 2. Add more information about the movie (cast, director, production, etc) 3. Good sources 4. Limited pics Anything else that we can add for this article?
[edit] Critical reception
The article mentions "mixed" critical reception and gives particular focus to a number of negative comments and reviews. I'd quite like to see some citation and context for this, since I remember the film being released to almost universal acclaim. I'm not saying there hasn't been any negative reaction (I note from a quick browse of IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes that Ebert in particular slammed it - but I could counter that by pointing to, say, Empire's review) - but it would be nice to see some evidence of the general critical context rather than simply some vague statements. I HATED that movie. It stole an hour of my life, and I want it back... I'm waiting... --66.218.28.237 04:33, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
This isnt a page to blast the movie; its a page to discuss improvements for the films wikipedia page. if you want to bag the movie go onto www.imdb.com-have fun. Lauren317 09:36, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Soundtrack
The article mentions that Candi Staton appears on the soundtrack, but I'm not so sure. I know a few volumes of the soundtrack exist, but not on the version I have. Istabo 21:41, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Longsword is not a Shotgun
Montague's Longsword is not a shotgun. As far as I can tell, it's some kind of machine gun.
[edit] Longsword
What's the weapon used for Montague's longsword?
[edit] Mercutio
Why is the only black cast member a crossdresser?? That could easily have been anyone else in the majority. It's cliché, like the only black guy in a horror movie being the first to die.--Ben414
- Mercutio isn't the only black cast member-do recall a certain prince of verona? plus Mercutio wasn't originally black and he died originally; they just cast a black actor. And he cross-dresses to show Mercutios flamboyant nature and demonstrate Romeo's hallucination.Lauren317 09:42, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
You might be being too harsh on the guy. Maybe he has a point, maybe making Mercution a crossdresser and black was just a racist statement made by the producers of the film. Perhaps a boycott should be in order? 68.126.198.62
- Geez, what are you talking about? This film is based upon a play, Harold Pirrineau portraited the character of Mercutio. Nothing more. He died, because Luhrman apparentely wanted to stay true to the original, so he had to die, he didn't die because he was black! I also like to point out that if the viewer has a problem with a man crossdressing, it is their feeling that maybe there's something wrong with that, you can blame the director for being a sexual perverted racist. Further more, he isn't the only black cast member, like Lauren pointed out, like Vondie Curtis-Hall who portraited Captain Prince; the upholder of justice in Verona. The film opens with a tv special, with a black female opening. Except that, the rest of the cast aren't all Anglo-Saxon Americans (Brian Dennehy, Irish-American; John Leguizamo, Colombian-Puerto Rican-American; Leonardo DiCaprio, German-Italian-American). --Soetermans 11:25, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
And besides,he only cross dressed because it was a dress-up party. notice Capulet and his wife looked pretty wierd too.
That is just absolutely rediculous that anyone would (a) notice something like that, and (b) think enough of it to post it. I agree. The fact that anyone decided to recognize the facts as a sexually perverted racism suggests a certain amount of racism in the actual person. 71.135.70.128 02:43, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Dani.
[edit] Ethnicity changed
Shouldnt we make note that the ethinicity of the lead roles were changed from Italians to Anglos and Cubans? I mean I am guessing that the Capulets were Cubans and Verona was actually mirroring Miami or something. Or it could be that Verona was mirroring Santa Monica, California and the Capulets were Creole Mexicans? I mean Tybalt and his gang had strong Latin Catholic influences and Paul Sorvino spoke with an accent which he clearly does not have in real life? The Montegues went from being artistocratic Italians to good ol' boy WASPS in the film. So I am guessing that the ethnic differences in Modern America Verona added to the notion of rivalry between the two houses. Am I correct?
- The Montagues weren't WASPs in the film; Romeo is clearly is still Roman Catholic. It is my impression that the Montagues are portrayed as Irish-Catholic and the Capulets as blended Italian-Latin Catholic in the film. Capmango 15:58, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- Good point, Capmango.
Wow if you have time to bitch about what race a person is and why its offending you either need to A.chill out or B. go out side. I mean my god! just watch the freak'n movie if you dont like what its saying dont watch it. i thought it prtrayed the characters very well, but it did stray from the actuall events a tad. But to sit here and read people complaining about how racist it was thats sad. I'm sure if the actor playing mercutio actually saw somthing wrong he would'nt have done the part, am I right?
- What the hell are you taking about? I am not complaining. I just thought that we should mention that in the movie version the ethnecities were changed. Thats all. I dont know how you read that I was bitching about that in my post. I am not mad about that in fact I found it pretty cool. So if anyone needs to chill, its you!
i reckon. i mean where in that post did he even mention mercutio? he was not talking about racism, he was talking about symbolism and how their different racial backrounds may be on perpose to further add to the "notion of rivalry". MatrixM
i think he pressed the wrong edit button
oooo. yeah right. he probably did. MAtrixM
[edit] Removed trivia section
I just removed the trivia section. A lot of the points were completely unecessary, original research, or were lifted almost verbatim from IMDB. Information like who auditioned for the role is completely irrelevent. Many actors/actresses audition for many roles in many movies. What's so different about this case? The list of guns is even more irrelevent and not even really a point of trivia at all, just random unecessary information. As for everything else, it could all be found at IMDB. That's why it's linked to at the bottom of the article, so people can go there and see this information rather than cluttering up the article with unecessary and unencyclopedic trivia points. --132 01:00, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- The information about actors that were considered for a role and ultimately rejected is not irrelevant, and it is not trivia for people who actually study filmmaking. Capmango 15:05, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
If people who study filmmaking look Wikipedia up for sources, we're in for a grim future of cinema. --Soetermans 22:30, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Spoiler Alert Warning
I am curently in the process of watching this movie, and I was dissapointed when I read a piece that spoiled the ending for me. I really think a spoiler warning should be added in here. 66.212.217.91 21:41, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Spoiler warnings are against Wikipedia guidelines. Avoid anything that says plot summary or synopsis if you don't want spoilers. Or just watch the whole movie before reading any of the article. Capmango 14:57, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
But wouldn't everyone already know what happens at the end of Romeo and Juliet even if they hadn't watched the movie? :p

[edit] Prince, Mercutio, and Paris
In the differences section, it says that Prince's relationship to Mercutio and Paris were absent from the film. I think this is right; the lines that establish that have been excised. An anonymous editor removed the Mercutio part while leaving the Paris part. I put it back, but if someone can point out the scene in the movie that establishes that Mercutio is related to Capt. Prince, then we can settle it here. Capmango 15:00, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Pineapple
In the trivia section for Pineapple is the following text:
In the film Romeo+Juliet by Baz Luhrmann, the pineapple stall in Sycamore Grove represents the Hawaiian culture of the Montague gang as both Hawaiian shirts and pineapples come from tropical cultures. This provides a contrast with the Capulets who wear black and are obviously Spanish like Tybalt. Spanish people invaded tropical areas i.e. South America (where the pineapples come from) in the 1500s which could also be interpreted as the clash between Montague and Capulet; the pineapples and the Spanish.
I thought it was interesting that this was missing from the movie page.Dschultz 14:48, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Gun Info
Please put the info about the different types of guns used in this movie back in the article. I have looked for what guns were used in this movie forever! and this is the only place I have ever found it. Put it back please!
[edit] Where's Postelthwaite?
Many viewers (including me) felt that one of the best cast members was Pete Postelthwaite, who gave us a very original and striking interpretation of Friar Lawrence. Why not mention him in the article? Tom129.93.17.229 (talk) 04:46, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
