Talk:Romario
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't know what the following means (maybe we need more context?):
Artilleryman
Romário is 2º bigger artilleryman of the history of the professional football, being surpassed only for Pelé. In day 23 March of 2005 Romário made a total of 900 goals (official FIFA count)
- I'm pretty sure it means goalscorer. --Joy [shallot] 09:27, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
-
- He's made more than 1000 goals, but in the official FIFA count is 900. He's really the second bigger artilleryman of the professional football, proven through abridgements of the games. --Mateusc 02:02, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
"Artilleryman" is a literal translation of the term artilheiro which in portuguese means (top) goalscorer. For example, the golden boot award given by FIFA is given to the artilheiro of the competition, or top goalscorer.LtDoc 21:16, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Arthur Friedenreich was the top goalscorer, but most of his goals are made in unofficial games. If Romario really uses his unofficial goals in this count, he isn't the second top goalscorer. pbalduino 11:36, 27 March 2007 (EAT)

[edit] Valencia/Flamengo
spent the next two years in Valencia, and then returned to Flamengo until 2000
-
- wrong, Romário played only 6 months in Valencia and back to Flamengo in 1999 that he decided in Carioca Championship.
[edit] GERMANY 2006--RONALDO AND ROMARIO
Wouldnt tha be great, they are my favorite players, adding Edmundo would make Brazils team even strongerDzoni 12:22, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
Are you insane? Romário can even do a 100 meter sprint anymore. And Edmundo hasn't played at a high level since 97!
HOW COME HE CANT RUN A 100 METER SPRINT,BUT HE WAS THE BEST ARTILLERYMAN IN BRASIL LAST SEASON?
- Why you have to love vandalism this much? With respect, Deliogul 23:15, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
I dont love vandalism, but it is true that he was best artilleryman in Brasil last season. With respectIce Cold 02:17, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Arthur Friedenreich
Some users are insisting say Arthur Friedenreich made more than 1000 goals. This is false and not recognized by FIFA. Stop push false and amateur point of view. Only Pelé made more than 1000 goals in the soccer history.
-
- I ask for insisting put this here a OFFICIAL source that comproves it. No magazines allowed, only CBF and FIFA words.
I think we shouldnt mention Arthur out of respect for Romario, since Romario is playing against much harder teams then Pele or Arthur played. For example,I dont think that Football was played in USA when Pele and Arthut played, but now even Amerikans play footbal, and they are proffesional about it,so its not easy for Romario to play even in USA. Thats why he is officialy second bigger artilleryman in the history and we should not mention Arthur F.
-
- There's no comprovation.. you need get CBF official statement. Amateur football not counts.
Many of Romario's goals have come in 'friendlies'. I say we should mention the disputed claim. Fullerov 16:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- The official Romario count is provided by FIFA. Yes, many friendly games by Barcelona was not counted because wasn't official game. He is already passed the mark of 1000.
I thought more than half of pele's goals weren't recognized by FIFA. SW 28/11/006
[edit] goals
The table shows much fewer goals than he actually has. Please someone correct the information.
Romario played from 1988 till 1993 for PSV Eindhoven.
[edit] Golden ball winner
Romario was not the golden ball winner in FIFA WorldCup in 1994 as he only scored 5 goals. Russian Salinko and Bulgarian Stoichkov both scored 6 goals. One more correction, Ronaldo was not the golden ball winner in FIFA WorldCup 1998, it was awarded to Croatian Dafor Suker who scored 6 goals. P.S: Please forgive me for the spelling mistakes with the names of the players I mentioned.
- Romario was the golden ball award winner in 1994, as was Ronaldo in 1998. The top goalscorer of the World Cup does not receive the golden ball award, but the one called golden boot or golden shoe. --ChaChaFut 02:46, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] against flamengo
he scored a goal today w/ vasco de gama against flamengo i think. they won 3-0. so he is either at 1000 or 999 now. --Doinelita 00:19, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 1000 goals!
Yeah he did it Romário scored their 1000th goal today! [1]
- or does he Romario admits his tally includes goals scored in youth, friendly and testimonial games. Londo06 06:37, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
- I've added some citations to this fact and toned down the article slightly to give a more independent view of the achievement.

- 'Counting on official goals only, Romário is the all-time top goalscorer in football history' What does this mean, surely official matches are only internationals and recognised club matches. Alexsanderson83 16:13, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Cleaned up bad english and moved the controversy right up top, necessary. Will batsman include runs they score in the nets, rugby players tries they score in training, swimmers times they do outside competition. Londo06 22:23, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- A brief check of the goals see him get 367 goals in 1st team games and international football. Nuff said. Londo06 22:29, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- THE NUMBER IS RECOGNIZED BY THE FIFA, ONLY FEW SOURCES THAT MADE SUCH ALLEGATIONS THAT THE NUMBER IS 929, ACTUALLY THE FIFA SAYS HERE THAT HE COUNTED 77 IN FRIENDLIES AND 21 IN TESTOMINALS MAKING IT 98 AND NOT 71! PLEASE CORRECT!

[edit] Brazil player up to 2005
Did Brazil need to play a 39 year old striker in 2005? Not sure that date on the infobox is correct Londo06 23:45, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
It is. That was his last game, as an homage. Stellatomailing 02:14, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] 1000th goal controversy
I just added Daily Mail reference and ask for reverters to develop the article with sources instead just revert. Erase sourced information is vandalism. --Ciao 90 21:47, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, just as erasing right info. Be careful when reverting things. —Lesfer (t/c/@) 21:53, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Doping
Should we include anything about the doping incident. I read that he tested + for something that can be used to hide anabolic steroids. Thanks, Brusegadi (talk) 22:30, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Personal Life
I just deleted this statement from the end of the Personal Life section: "In 2006 Romário engaged in a campaign to dismiss prejudice and promote inclusion." I deleted it because it makes no sense. I only bring it up here because it could be related to the previous sentence about his son having Downs Syndrome (though that is unsourced). Because it is certainly possible that Romario has, because of his son's condition, begun to speak out about prejudice and exclusion of Downs Syndrome sufferers, I thought I'd go ahead and list it here in case someone wanted to do the research required to bring that piece of information up to wikipedia standards. Thanks, Isaiah (talk) 00:12, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
