It is very likely that the author of this article is correct that Roman would have become obsolete otherwise but the fact that one could not play it in an American Contract Bridge League tournament (other than at the very highest level) was not helpful. In defense of the reasoning in the article, I have to admit that canape systems have generally died off and canape is not even popular in France anymore. - Will in New Haven
