This became a generic term for the Romanians working outside their country, in the geographical space belonging to the European Union. The biggest communities may be found in Spain and in Italy.

In 2007, the Spanish authorities reported a number of 527,000 Romanians as legal residents in Spain^[1]. However, it is believed that the real number of Romanian workers in that country is much bigger, as they come as illegal immigrants and work mainly in the underground economy, especially in agriculture and constructions.

The Romanians working abroad are making an important impact on Romania's budget. In 2007, seven (!) billion euros were transferred to Romania from abroad, by the workers who wanted to support their families at home. The Romanian current account deficit in 2007 increased by 66% from 2006, reaching 16.9 billion euro, and the money transferred from abroad played an important role in balancing this disequilibrium^[2].
