Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson

The Diocese of Paterson is a particular church or diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, which includes 3 counties in northern New Jersey: Passaic, Morris, and Sussex. The diocese is a ceremonial suffragen of the Archdiocese of Newark. The diocese has over 377,000 Catholics and 111 parishes. The diocese was established by Pope Pius XI on December 9, 1937 taking territory formerly part of the then Diocese of Newark. Bishop Thomas J. Walsh, the then bishop of Newark was made the Archbishop of the newly elevated Archdiocese of Newark and the auxiliary bishop, Thomas H. McLaughlin was appointed as the first bishop of Paterson and the former parish church of St John the Baptist in Paterson as its Cathedral. The Patron of the Diocese of Paterson is St John the Baptist. As of the year 2004 there were 211 diocesan priests, 161 religious priests, and 192 permanent deacons, 199 male and 816 female religious serving the diocese which has a population (catholic and non-catholic) of over 1.2 million people.

[edit] Proper Feasts Celebrated in the Diocese of Paterson

Each diocese in the Catholic Church celebrates proper feasts. The Proper Feasts for the Diocese of Paterson are: June 24 - The Birthday of John the Baptist and June 30 - The Dedication of the Cathedral Church. On these days the Local Church of Paterson celebrates in a special way the victory of Christ over the Cross, the spread of the Gospel and gives thanks for the gift of the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and that it is consecrating the lands and people of the Diocese of Paterson to God.

Before the establishment of the Diocese of Paterson the Ordinaries of Newark from 1853-1937, the Ordinaries of New York from 1808-1853 and the Ordinaries of Baltimore from 1789-1808 had governance over the territory that is now the Diocese of Paterson.
