Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton is a Roman Catholic archdiocese that includes the Province of Alberta and includes the suffragan dioceses of Calgary and Saint Paul. Historically, the archdiocese was preceded by the Diocese of St Albert which was erected in 1871. In 1912 the present archdiocese was erected.
On March 22, 2007, Vatican Information Services announced that a Halifax native, Bishop Richard William Smith of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pembroke, Canada, had been appointed as Archbishop-elect of Edmonton by Pope Benedict XVI.
As of 2004, the archdiocese contains 140 parishes, 79 active diocesan priests, 90 religious priests, and 340,000 Catholics. It also has 376 Women Religious, 111 Religious Brothers, and 1 permanent deacon. The archbishop's cathedra is located in St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica in Edmonton, Alberta.
