• a territorial basis depending on a fixed territory, called a territorial prelature or a territorial abbacy
• a personal basis depending on a persons wherever they may be, called a personal prelature

Roman Catholic prelatures can be structurally distinguished on an organisational basis:

• a mission sui iuris
• an apostolic prefecture
• an apostolic vicariate
• a diocese
