Rolando Fonseca Jiménez (born June 6, 1974 in San José) is a Costa Rican football player, who plays as a striker for Comunicaciones of the Guatemalan National League. He is regarded as one of the country's most talented players of all time.
Nicknamed 'El Principito', Fonseca has played for Comunicaciones in Guatemala, Independiente Medellín and America de Cali in Colombia, Pachuca and La Piedad in Mexico, Deportivo Saprissa, LD Alajuelense and currently for Municipal Liberia in Costa Rica.
In Costa Rica, he has played a total of 271 games, scoring over 100 goals, between the league's two best teams, Saprissa and LD Alajuelense. His debut was with Deportivo Saprissa back in June 1st, 1991 against ASODELI, he scored his first goal against San Carlos on August 28th. He has won Costa Rican championships in 1993-94, 1994-95 with Saprissa, and 1996-97, 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2004-05 with LD Alajuelense. Additionally, he has won CONCACAF Champions' Cups in 1993, 1995 with Saprissa, and 2004 with LD Alajuelense.
Fonseca has also been a fixture on the Costa Rica national team since 1992. He has played in more than 100 games for his national football team, and is currently the best all-time scorer for Costa Rica, with 47 goals. He scored his 47th national goal against Chile with a spectacular strike with the goal at his back, that was the number 1000 for Costa Rica in international matches. Fonseca played in two games for the team at the 2002 World Cup. He is also the all-time top scorer in the UNCAF Nations Cup with 19 goals he was also voted as a best player of this tournament in 1999 scoring 5 goals.
By his well performance in LD Alajuelense in the last 2 seasons and the latest games he played with the Costa Rica national football team, he received many offers from clubs in China, Chile, Turkey and MLS, but he decided at last to become co-owner, player and captain of Municipal Liberia in Costa Rica.
Although he was having a great season, he left the Municipal Liberia's project a few days before finishing the Apertura's Tournament, apparently due personal issues and some differences with actual and until that moment co-owner Mario Sotela. There were some rumors of he going back to LD Alajuelense but they were all discarded in a couple of days. He got in conversations with Brujas F.C.'s owner but at the end of the day, he decided to go back to Comunicaciones in Guatemala, were he has some good memories and is the best foreign player the team has ever had.
