From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roland Tec is a writer and movie director.
He is the writer/director of the 1999 film, All the Rage (film) (Strand Releasing) which is widely considered a hallmark of the Queer Indie Film Movement of the '90s for what was then its unprecedented critical view of A-list gay male culture of perfection.. One of the stars of ALL THE RAGE, Jay Corcoran, went on to direct documentaries on similar topics such as LIFE AND DEATH ON THE A-LIST and UNDETECTABLE. Another star of ALL THE RAGE, Paul Outlaw went on to create several experimental solo performance pieces including HERE BE DRAGONS and BERSERKER, both of which played the New York and San Francisco International Film Festival, among others.
ALL THE RAGE was discovered by John Tilley at the 1997 Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Outfest and brought to Mike Thomas, who with Marcus Hu, founded Strand Releasing and then went on to create Rialto Pictures and its offshoot Jour de Fete. John Tilley's company, Cinevista was the first to distribute the early films of Pedro Almodóvar to the U.S. market in the 1980s with titles such as Law of Desire and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Prior to his work in film, Roland Tec was the founder and artistic director of New Opera Theatre Ensemble, a Boston-based improvisational opera company which mounted new work in such unexpected venues as The Boston Public Library and The Charles Hayden Planetarium at Museum of Science, Boston.
Since his move to New York City in 2000, Tec has continued his work in theatre, mounting shows such as BODILY FUNCTION, which was produced at The Culture Project and produced by Rachel Reiner Productions, LLC, founder of the New Producers Alliance, and THE WRECK BEHIND US at the Duplex, produced by Darren Chilton, Brad Carpenter and Chris Arruda.
In 2007, Roland Tec co-produced Edward Zwick's film Defiance (2008 film), an adaptation of the book by the same name written by Nechama Tec, who is Roland Tec's mother. DEFIANCE stars Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber and will be released by Paramount Vantage in December of 2008. DEFIANCE marked the reunion after 20 years of collaborators Edward Zwick and producer Pieter Jan Brugge who had last worked together on the filmGlory (film) starring Denzel Washington.
Roland Tec's latest directorial effort in film is WE PEDAL UPHILL, a tapestry of Post-9/11 America starring some of New York theatre's finest actors such as: Alvin Epstein (KING LEAR) and David Drake (actor) (THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME).
WE PEDAL UPHILL will be released by Cinevolve Studios, a new distributor created by two former principals of Cinema Libre, Arik Treston and Nicole Ballivian.
