Roger Kamien

Roger Kamien is a retired professor emeritus of musicology in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He is the author of the book Music: An Appreciation. A book intended to show students the basics and the importance of music. His book is considered essentially a textbook because its use mostly in colleges (and sometimes in high schools) The book was published by McGraw-Hill and provides learners with classical and modern type of music and how to understand music.
Kamien studied at Queens (NY) College. He developed the concept of the Listening Outline, which he incorporated into the first edition of Music: An Appreciation and which he has refined and enhanced in every subsequent edition. This is a text with which students of all levels and backgrounds can feel comfortable. Currently his latest version of this work has been the Music: An Appreciation 8th Edition. It contains a multimedia CD-ROM and history of jazz, rock, classical period and the composition of an orchestra, including many more facts about music and its development in history with the greatest composers and musicians in history.
In his musical training, Kamien has studied the piano with Claudio Arrau, among others; and Schenkerian analysis with Felix Salzer and Ernst Oster[1]. He has earned his doctorate degree from Princeton University in 1964[2].
He is also the editor of the widely used series, Norton Scores, and the author of numerous academic articles on musicology.
