Roger William Jepsen is a former United States Senator from Iowa.
He was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa on December 23, 1928, where he attended the public schools and the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
He graduated from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona in 1950 with a baccalaureate and in 1953 with a master's degree. At ASU, Jepsen was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, initiating in 1949.
He became a paratrooper in the United States Army 1946-1947 and served in the United States Army Reserve 1948-1960. He was active in farming, insurance and health care businesses.
Served as:
- Scott County, Iowa Supervisor 1962-1965;
- Iowa State senator 1966-1968
- Lieutenant Governor of Iowa 1968-1972
- Elected Republican United States Senator on November 7, 1978, and served from January 3, 1979, to January 3, 1985; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1984. A major issue in the campaign was Senator Jepsen's patronage of a massage parlor suspected of harboring prostitutes. Jepsen was widely ridiculed for his explanation that he "thought it was a health club." Yet another issue was Jepsen's decision to support the sale of AWACs to Saudi Arabia despite having promised not to. After the vote, President Reagan's aides gloated about having forced Jepsen to "look into his political grave."[citation needed]
He was:
- Co-chairman Joint Economic Committee (98th Congress)
- Chairman of the National Credit Union Administration.
He and his family reside in Alexandria, Virginia.
